The Berlin Wall

I've always wanted to visit Germany for as long as I could remember.

My problem was this: which of the many famous cities in Germany should I visit first?

I thought about it for a while before coming to the conclusion that the most famous thing in Germany is likely the Berlin Wall.

So, I booked my ticket and headed to Berlin. I had limited time to spend here, so I made the most of my time.

After settling in for the night, I woke up bright and early to get to the remains of the famous Berlin Wall.

It should be noted that there are small sections of the wall still standing throughout the city that used to divide East Germany from West Germany. You can see them as you wander throughout the city.

And that's exactly what I did. I wandered around the city snapping various photos of the pieces of the Berlin Wall that remain, including the section in the picture above.

My best guess is that the sections of the wall remain up throughout the city to serve as a reminder of what once was.

If you want to get a true feel for what it was like to live in Germany when the wall was up, visit the Berlin Wall Memorial. It does an excellent job of taking you back to a time of turmoil and separation.

You can still tell to this day which part was East Germany and which part was West Germany. East Germany is full of industrial-style buildings which have since been turned into apartment complexes among other things.

It was fascinating to see back in history to a time not so far in the past where there was so much hatred in one divided area. It was a chilling reminder of a broken past that hopefully won't be repeated anywhere anytime soon.
